Harris Participates in the Ukraine Peace Summit

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is participating in the international peace summit for Ukraine, which begins today and will last for two days in Switzerland. She will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and deliver a speech before world leaders. An American official told reporters that she will emphasize that the outcome of the war in Ukraine affects the entire world and will call for as many countries as possible to support the idea that Russia's invasion violates the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter, and that Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected.

He noted that "Russia's absence will not affect the summit, but he expressed regret over Beijing's decision," hoping that "the Chinese will express themselves. They claim to be strong supporters of sovereignty and territorial integrity, yet they allow a country they strongly support, Russia, to violate these principles." The official stated, "It is up to Ukrainian leaders to decide how and under what conditions this war can end. Our task, and what we are trying to do, is to put them in a better position on the battlefield for any potential negotiations."

Harris will meet with Zelensky and deliver a speech in the summit's general session. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will represent the United States at the summit tomorrow, Sunday, and will help establish working groups on the return of Ukrainian children from Russia and energy security. Ninety-two countries and eight organizations are expected to attend the summit.
