Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, stated that there are some gaps between Hamas' responses and the proposal made by U.S. President Joe Biden regarding a ceasefire. During a joint press conference with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, the Qatari minister emphasized that "we are trying to reach an agreement for a ceasefire and prisoner exchange as quickly as possible," stressing that "an immediate ceasefire is the only way to curb escalation on all fronts, and there is a moral obligation to reach a ceasefire agreement as soon as possible."
He affirmed that "we rely on our partners to exert all forms of pressure to achieve a ceasefire and start a political process," considering that "recognizing the Palestinian state is an important message against double standards, and Spain's recognition of the Palestinian state is a very historic and significant step."
He welcomed Spain's joining of the lawsuit brought by South Africa to the International Court of Justice, underscoring that "we reject double standards, and the rule of law must be applied to everyone." He added, "Countries must take steps to support the two-state solution, and the law must be applied to everyone; no one should be above the law," considering that "joint action is the best way to avoid the repercussions of conflicts in the Middle East and Europe, and we continuously coordinate with Spain regarding the latest developments in the talks."
