The Libyan House of Representatives has announced the opening of candidacy for the presidency of a new government, inviting those interested to submit their candidacy documents to the council's headquarters in Benghazi starting today, Sunday, until August 11. A statement released by the House of Representatives spokesperson, Abdullah Bliheq, on Sunday said that the head of the council, Aguila Saleh, calls on representatives and members of the High State Council to "endorse" those they deem qualified to hold the position of prime minister, according to the statement by Bliheq.
Bliheq noted that this call is made "based on the provisions of the constitutional declaration and the thirteenth constitutional amendment, and the laws governing elections issued by the House of Representatives, as well as what was agreed upon in the outcomes of the 6+6 committee, and based on the agreement between the head of the House of Representatives and the head of the High State Council and the President of the Presidential Council at the Arab League headquarters" in Cairo on March 10.
The statement also indicated that the call is based on the statement issued by members of both the House of Representatives and the High State Council following the meeting held in Cairo on July 18. This comes despite the strong disagreement between the head of the High State Council, Mohamed Takala, and Aguila Saleh regarding the powers of the two councils, especially after the "House of Representatives" approved the draft law for the state's general budget.
