Members of the Libyan House of Representatives and the State Council agreed today, Thursday, to form a new government and establish a roadmap to complete necessary prerequisites aimed at holding elections. This agreement was reached during a meeting of members in Cairo, intended to facilitate a political process to help Libya overcome its crises.
The final statement from the meeting clarified that the participants agreed on "the necessity of conducting presidential and legislative elections according to the agreed-upon laws issued by the House of Representatives, while continuing to expand the circle of consensus." The meeting also called for "a proposal for the roadmap from the members of both councils as the main course to complete the other necessary prerequisites to reach elections."
The attendees agreed to "form a single new government by inviting the House of Representatives to announce the opening of nominations, starting the process of receiving endorsements and reviewing the applications of candidates for a competent national-led government to oversee the affairs of the country."
Additionally, the statement indicated that a consensus was reached on "the need to intensify and unify efforts to end the state of political and institutional division, which exacerbates corruption, rising prices, and an unprecedented deterioration of living conditions for citizens."
The statement also called on the international community to support national consensus and respect the sovereignty of national decision-making and the unity and integrity of Libyan territory, emphasizing the rejection of the principle of seizing power by fait accompli.
