Does Iraq Fear Trump's Return to the White House?

Political researcher Mohamed Ali Al-Hakim confirmed on Monday that there is concern in Iraq regarding Donald Trump's potential return to the White House in the upcoming period. Al-Hakim stated that "Trump is known for his hardline positions against Iran and Iran's allies in Iraq and the wider region. After Biden's withdrawal from the upcoming presidential election race, the likelihood of Trump's return to the White House has become almost certain, which poses a significant concern for the currently ruling Iraqi factions, fearing he may make decisions against them since they are close to and somewhat supported by Tehran."

He added that "Trump's return to the White House means no definitive U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, and U.S. policies towards Iraq may change. Therefore, there is apprehension among the current Iraqi leaders regarding Trump's return," pointing out that Biden's withdrawal will alter the landscape in the region and the world in the upcoming period.

U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he decided to step aside from running in the U.S. presidential elections scheduled for November 5. He declared his support for Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed him in the race for the White House. Reports indicated that officials from Kamala Harris’s campaign and her allies made hundreds of calls inviting participants in the party conference next month to support her nomination for the presidential election against Republican candidate Donald Trump.

The American newspaper "The Hill" reported that Kamala Harris received the backing of about 531 Democratic delegates for her presidential run following the president's withdrawal. It clarified that all delegates were from Tennessee, Florida, New Hampshire, Louisiana, North Carolina, and South Carolina, confirming their support for Harris. It is noteworthy that Harris needs support from at least 1,986 of nearly 4,000 Democratic delegates to secure the party nomination.

U.S. elections feature two types of delegates: those who represent their party and choose their candidate for the primaries, and those who choose the president from different party candidates. Former President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that current President Joe Biden is "the worst president ever in our country's history," just minutes after Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential election. In a phone call with CNN, Trump expressed that he believes defeating Vice President Kamala Harris would be easier than defeating Biden, despite the Democrats not yet officially announcing their new candidate, although Biden has voiced his support for her candidacy.
