Some Democratic Party leaders seem to have suddenly awakened from a long slumber. They are worried, and some are scared, due to their nominee Joe Biden's stuttering and confusion during parts of the June 27 debate, as if they had not witnessed such issues before. Many who are now calling for a different candidate were among his staunch supporters prior to the debate. Some even enthusiastically participated in fundraising events for his campaign.
Just as none of them explain why they did not recognize earlier what they now consider an electoral disaster, we have yet to find a satisfactory answer to a question that should be very logical: if they believe Biden's loss is becoming likely, how can they guarantee that a replacement's chances would be better? And is there enough time before the election for a new campaign?
It is true that Biden's declining mental and physical capacity is a significant factor, but we do not know precisely how much impact it will have compared to other factors, some of which may be more important. For example, if Biden lost voters in certain states due to his administration's involvement in the aggression against Gaza, what difference would a new candidate, who adopts the same positions, make?
The same applies to voters prioritizing economic and social issues. Does an unknown replacement candidate have a plan to reduce inflation from over 8% to 2 or even 3% in two or three months? This argument can be extended to various electoral issues, as it is unlikely that a replacement candidate would bring anything substantively new. If Biden were to resign under increased pressure, the new candidate's impact would be "merely cosmetic," affecting voters who may be concerned about Biden's mental and physical state, regardless of other considerations.
Moreover, if we add to that the halt of the campaign during the period between Biden's resignation announcement and the election of a replacement candidate, and the potential chaos among the Democrats during that time, it appears that replacing him could involve an uncalculated risk, similar to how those pushing for it failed to consider Biden's age and health from the start.
