Republican candidate for U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance stated on Sunday that he "supports Donald Trump's call for presidents to have the right to express their opinions on Federal Reserve policy." Vance added that this includes actions regarding interest rate changes, noting that these decisions should be "political." Vance made these remarks during an interview with CNN after Trump told reporters on Thursday, "I feel that the president should at least have an opinion on this matter."
Clarifying the former president's stance, Vance mentioned that Trump believes political leadership in the United States should have a greater voice in the country's monetary policy. While the president nominates members of the Federal Reserve, past administrations have largely insisted that White House intervention in the bank's monetary decisions could create short-term political pressures that may ultimately harm the U.S. economy in the long term. Vance stated, "I agree with him (Trump). This should fundamentally be a political decision. Whether we agree or disagree, elected leaders of America should be involved in the most important decisions facing our country."
