U.S. President Donald Trump launched a fierce attack on his political opponents from the Democratic Party and previous U.S. administrations, touting his policy towards Iran as a success, stating it had led to Iran's complete military 'defeat'.
In a post on the "Truth Social" platform, Trump sharply criticized members of the Democratic Party, accusing them of failing to understand the magnitude of what he termed a 'success' in confronting Tehran.
He stated, "(Former President Barack) Obama kept giving them billions of dollars in cash, and never used our military, which was depleted at the time, to do what should have been done to rein in Iran, the world's number one sponsor of terrorism."
He continued, "They had no respect for him whatsoever. They thought he, like Sleepy Joe Biden, was a weak and ineffective leader, and they were 100% right about that. Iran got away with murder for 47 years, until I came along. Then everything changed. America came back!"
In a subsequent post, Trump remarked that it was "funny how dumb Democrats like to say Iran is in a stronger position today than it was 3 months ago, despite the fact they were militarily defeated and are left without a navy or air force."
He added, "That's why I call them (dumb Democrats)."
These statements come amid global anticipation of the U.S.-Iran understanding path, following a framework agreement that ended the war and opened the door for broader negotiations, while issues surrounding Lebanon, the Strait of Hormuz, and nuclear guarantees continue to be major tests of both parties' seriousness.
The planned talks in Switzerland were previously postponed, with uncertainty surrounding the start date of the negotiation phase aimed at reaching a final agreement within 60 days.
The final agreement is expected to address Iran's nuclear program, sanctions, frozen assets, and de-escalation guarantees.
