Damascus Explosions Raise Questions: Is Hezbollah or Israel Behind the Attack?

In a new escalation targeting the Syrian capital, the Syrian Interior Ministry reported two consecutive explosions near the Ministry of Tourism building in Damascus on Tuesday, resulting in 18 injuries, including four police officers. The blasts coincided with the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron.

Analyzing the dimensions and timing of the attack, lawyer Nabil Halabi told 'Warda' that the primary and clear goal of these operations is to destabilize security and stability in Syria during this critical phase. Halabi dismissed any connection between the incident and President Macron’s visit, asserting instead that the events carry a set of intertwined political and security messages indicating the involvement of certain regional parties.

Halabi explained that current indications open the door to two main hypotheses: the first is the potential involvement of Hezbollah, given its past activities, suggesting the explosions could be a direct response to recent Syrian official proposals regarding Lebanon’s stability and the disarmament of the group. The second hypothesis involves Israel, aiming to disrupt Syria's internal situation as a form of pressure or punishment after the Syrian administration's refusal to engage militarily in Lebanon. These developments thrust the Syrian capital back into the forefront of regional tensions, raising questions about the nature of the hidden conflict intended to be settled on Syrian soil.
