U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Iran has requested to continue talks with the United States, confirming that Washington has agreed to this. However, he stressed that the U.S. has made it unequivocally clear to Tehran that the ceasefire period is over.
Trump, in a post on the 'Truth Social' platform, stated, "The Islamic Republic of Iran requested to continue the talks, and we have agreed to that. However, the United States has made it abundantly clear to them that the ceasefire has ended."
These statements come days after military escalation between the two sides, where U.S. forces carried out strikes targeting sites inside Iran in response to drone attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation, Tehran targeted U.S. military bases in several Gulf countries.
Meanwhile, Qatar has intensified its diplomatic efforts to contain the crisis by sending a high-level delegation to Tehran to hold talks with Iranian officials. This effort aims to revive the negotiation process and implement the memorandum of understanding, particularly regarding the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Previously, Iran asserted that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz would occur according to arrangements it deems appropriate, reflecting the ongoing disagreement between the parties on how to implement the agreement, despite ongoing communication channels and regional mediation.
