Yair Netanyahu, the eldest son of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has legally changed his name to Yonatan Hon, according to media reports citing tax documents.
Israeli newspaper "Haaretz" reported that Yair's 2026 tax records were filed under the new name, carrying the same ID number and address as those from his 2024 tax filings under his original name.
According to Israeli law, a legal name change is irreversible for seven years.
It remains unclear whether Yair, 34, plans to publicly adopt the new name or if the change serves other purposes, as he continues to use his original name on his social media accounts.
The new name pays homage to his late uncle, Yonatan (Yoni) Netanyahu, a former elite IDF unit leader, and "Hon," his maternal grandfather's original surname.
Yair, a right-wing activist and podcast host residing in Florida, has previously used "Hon" as an alias on social media platforms for years, though the reasons for formalizing it now are unknown.
The eldest Netanyahu son is known for his controversial online stances and connections with far-right figures in Europe and the US.
This is not the first instance of name changes within the Netanyahu family. Property records in London have previously shown that his other son, Avner, purchased an apartment using the alias "Avi Segal," his paternal grandmother's pre-marriage surname.
Avner attributed this choice last year to security concerns during his studies in the UK capital.
Prime Minister Netanyahu himself changed his name to "Benjamin Ben Nitai" during his student days at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the 1970s, later stating the change was to facilitate pronunciation for Americans.
