Officials reported that Russian missiles targeted the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and its surrounding region early Sunday morning, resulting in at least one death, nine injuries, and fires across the city.
A Reuters witness reported a series of powerful explosions shaking the Ukrainian capital, while the Ukrainian air force warned of a ballistic missile threat.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko stated on the Telegram app that fires erupted in a student dormitory, a residential building, and a supermarket.
He added that the attack targeted several non-residential buildings and warehouses, with parked cars and administrative buildings catching fire in several neighborhoods.
The city’s military administration reported that two people were injured in the Kyiv region, and warehouses suffered damage.
Reports indicated that the Russian missile attack on Kyiv involved the launch of more than 20 ballistic missiles.
Separately, Russian media claimed that Russian forces are continuing their advance in the Kharkiv and Donetsk provinces, noting that they have captured the town of Volokhovskoye and have begun battles for the neighboring town of Zakharovka in the Kharkiv region.
Military expert Andrey Marochko told the TASS agency, "After practically expelling Ukrainian forces from Volokhovskoye, our fighters have begun battles for Zakharovka".
He noted that Russian forces have made significant progress towards Volchansk over the past week, significantly expanding their control zone in that sector.
Meanwhile, the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, announced that the Western Forces Group is advancing along a broad front within its area of responsibility in Ukraine's special military operation.
The town of Mirnoye is now under Russian control, and the capture of the towns of Shevchenko, Krasnoyarskoye, and Svetloye is nearing completion.
In the Sloviansk and Kramatorsk directions, units of the Third Army have captured Pyskonivka and reached the outskirts of Nikolayevka, with the advancing units positioned less than 5 kilometers from the eastern outskirts of Kramatorsk city.
Gerasimov indicated Saturday that the Central Forces Group continues its advance north of Krasnoarmeysk and is engaged in battles in the cities of Dobropole and Anivka.
