Understanding the Causes of Twice-a-Month Menstrual Cycles

Reasons for menstruation occurring twice a month

On average, most women experience a menstrual cycle about every 28 days. However, a natural cycle can vary between 21 and 35 days. This means that some women might observe their menstruation occurring twice within a calendar month if they naturally have shorter cycles.

Nevertheless, if periods occur more frequently than usual or if there is spotting between periods, it may indicate an underlying health issue that requires medical diagnosis, especially if accompanied by severe pain, heavy bleeding, or other symptoms.

Primary Causes of Twice-a-Month Menstrual Periods

Several factors could lead to experiencing periods twice in one month, including:

Menstruation
The menstrual cycle

Short Menstrual Cycle

If a woman's menstrual cycle is 21 or 22 days long, it may result in menstruating twice in a calendar month. This is considered normal for some women.

No treatment is needed if the cycle is regular and not accompanied by unusual symptoms.

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal imbalances are among the most common causes of irregular menstrual cycles.

Stress and Psychological Pressure

Chronic stress can affect the hormones that regulate menstruation, potentially leading to the period arriving earlier, later, or resulting in irregular bleeding.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS can cause disruptions in ovulation, leading to irregular menstrual cycles or repeated bleeding episodes.

Additional symptoms may include increased hair growth, acne, or difficulties with pregnancy.

Thyroid Disorders

Both underactive and overactive thyroid conditions can lead to changes in menstrual cycles, including more frequent periods or irregularity.

Use of Hormonal Birth Control

Some women may experience frequent bleeding during the initial months of using birth control pills, hormonal IUDs, or other hormonal methods.

Typically, this resolves over time, but persistent bleeding should be evaluated by a doctor.

Uterine Fibroids or Polyps

Fibroids or polyps in the uterus may cause mid-cycle bleeding or repeated periods within a month.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis can affect cycle regularity and may result in significant pain during menstruation or intercourse.

Pregnancy and Its Complications

In some cases, what a woman may assume is a second period might be bleeding associated with pregnancy or its complications. Thus, it’s essential to perform a pregnancy test if there's a possibility of pregnancy.

When is Twice-a-Month Menstruation Normal?

It may be considered normal if:

-The cycle is naturally short.

-It happened only once.

-It wasn't accompanied by heavy bleeding or intense pain.

-There are no other health symptoms present.

When to Consult a Doctor?

Doctors should be consulted if:

-The cycle is consistently twice a month for several consecutive months.

-There’s extremely heavy bleeding.

-Bleeding persists for an extended period.

-Severe pain accompanies it.

-There’s dizziness or extreme fatigue.

-There are unusual discharges or fever present.

-A woman is post-menopausal.
