Iran has signaled its intent to escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the broader region should diplomatic efforts with the United States fail. A senior Iranian official unveiled a shift in Iran's policy from a defensive to an offensive stance.
Reuters reported on Monday that the Iranian official stated Tehran would increase tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the entire region if ongoing diplomatic initiatives with Washington do not succeed.
The official noted a strategic shift towards offense in Iranian policy, amidst ongoing negotiations and communications between Tehran and Washington.
Simultaneously, U.S. President Donald Trump, in an interview with Fox News, announced that the U.S. maintains communication channels with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard through informal routes.
Trump emphasized that the White House is not rushing into an agreement with Iran, reiterating Washington's commitment to preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Trump declared on his platform, Truth Social, "The primary goal, as always, is to ensure Iran never acquires nuclear weapons under any circumstances."
Additionally, Trump issued a threat to Oman, stating, "If Oman stands in our way, we will strike it severely."
In a parallel development, sources from Al Arabiya and Al Hadath reported that the U.S. and Iran have agreed to extend a ceasefire for 60 days, coinciding with the end of the deadline specified in the memorandum of understanding signed in June.
The Strait of Hormuz is an international maritime passage that connects the Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, crucial for the transit of oil and gas exports from regional countries, alongside commercial shipping traffic.
Recently, the strait has witnessed tensions and incidents affecting navigation amidst the confrontation between Iran and the U.S., impacting some vessels and supply routes due to security developments.
These statements from the Iranian official come as discussions between Tehran and Washington continue regarding ceasefire extensions, with no official joint announcement yet on any new extension details or related conditions.
