The Saudi National Development Fund has approved new financing exceeding 421 million Saudi riyals, equivalent to approximately $112 million, as part of the Electronic Games and Digital Sports Financing Program, based on the program's data until the end of the fourth quarter of 2025.
This funding is part of the Kingdom's efforts to promote the growth of the electronic games and digital sports industry, enhancing its competitive edge both locally and globally. This initiative aligns with the expansion of the digital economy and the increasing focus on creative and technological sectors as promising areas for investment and diversifying income sources.
The financing directly benefits small and medium-sized local developers who typically find it challenging to secure bank financing for a high-risk, long-cycle return sector. A report from the program's management revealed that the funding has so far contributed to the completion of over 127 digital games.
Financing Supports Gaming Industry Base
The program's role is not just limited to funding game development projects but also extends to expanding specialized financing for the sector, providing financial tools that assist local companies in growth, innovation, and developing new products. Additionally, it boosts their ability to attract further investments and expand into markets.
This support targets a segment of developers and local companies needing specialized financing aligned with the nature of the gaming industry, requiring extended periods for product development and market entry, alongside high-risk levels prior to achieving commercial returns.
The Kingdom aims to establish an integrated ecosystem in the gaming and digital sports sector by supporting companies and developers, enhancing local capabilities, and broadening the activities related to the industry, including platforms, startups, and game development projects.
This direction is in line with the Saudi Vision 2030 goals to bolster the contribution of the digital economy and develop knowledge-based and innovation-driven sectors, transforming electronic games and digital sports into a sustainable economic activity capable of providing new investment opportunities and jobs.
The ongoing government funding reflects a shift toward building a comprehensive local industry rather than merely hosting events or consuming global products, by empowering national companies to develop scalable digital games and products accessible to regional and international markets.
The next phase is set to test the beneficiary companies' ability to translate funding into sustainable growth through developing competitive products, increasing revenues, attracting private investments, and expanding beyond the local market.
As the number of beneficiaries rises to 82 entities and games developed exceed 127, the program strengthens the base of companies operating in the sector. The success of these efforts remains tied to the local market's capacity to convert financial support into sustainable and competitive companies and products, supporting the Kingdom's ambition to solidify its position as a regional and global hub for the gaming and digital sports industry.
