Qatar's Foreign Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, is scheduled to visit Tehran on Thursday in an effort to revive mediation and de-escalate tensions between Iran and the United States. This moves comes against a backdrop of increasing U.S. economic pressures and ongoing disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari stated that the discussions will focus on restoring free navigation in the strait to pre-February 28 conditions, as well as creating conducive conditions for resuming dialogue.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the visit aims to discuss continuing Qatari mediation efforts and regional developments. It follows visits earlier this week by Oman's Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi and Pakistan's Army Chief Asim Munir to Tehran.
This mediation occurs amid a halt in most military operations over the past month without achieving diplomatic breakthroughs, while Washington has ramped up sanctions intended to isolate Iran and pressure its trade partners.
The visit coincides with an announcement by the UK Maritime Trade Operations that a tanker was hit by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire that was later controlled, with no injuries or environmental damage reported.
