France's Ambassador to the United Nations, Jerome Bonnafont, urged the Security Council to vote on renewing the mandate of the nuclear experts' team for Iran, emphasizing the need to sanction Tehran if it refuses to allow inspections of its facilities.
Bonnafont stated that the council will have to vote on renewing the mandate of the team concerned with Iran, and this issue was revisited in September 2025 when sanctions were reimposed on Iran following its non-compliance with its nuclear commitments.
The French UN Ambassador also revealed that the council will discuss Iran’s failure to meet its nuclear obligations this month. He noted, "Concerning Iran, the core of our discussions this month will be the nuclear issue. We will assess Iran's failure to uphold its nuclear commitments and the resulting consequences."
Bonnafont condemned Iran's regional escalation and the impact of closing the Strait of Hormuz on the global economy.
He explained that "It is clear that this discussion is not conducted in isolation, but within a multifaceted context... One aspect of which is the current situation in the Gulf, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, and especially freedom of navigation."
He further added, "Full freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz has not been restored, which has severe negative repercussions on the international situation, global economy, and food security."
