Lebanese Interior Minister Ahmed Hajar has stated that Lebanon is firmly committed to direct negotiations with Israel under the auspices of the United States to ensure the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the south and the deployment of the Lebanese Army while enabling residents to return to their villages.
The minister emphasized to Al Arabiya.net/Al Hadath.net that "the situation in the region is tense and affects Lebanon," adding, "We have decided to pursue a unique path in negotiations with Israel."
Hajar's statements coincided with his official visit to Pakistan, where he held talks with the Pakistani president, prime minister, army chief, and his counterpart, the Pakistani Interior Minister. During the visit, Lebanon signed a memorandum of understanding with Pakistan for prisoner exchange.
Discussions also covered cooperation across various domains, particularly in combating drugs, terrorism, and information exchange.
Regional Role of Pakistan
The Lebanese minister explained that his discussions with Pakistani officials provided a general overview of the regional situation, especially in Lebanon. The talks highlighted the Israeli occupation of the south and the ongoing daily aggressions, alongside the negotiation process led by President Joseph Aoun under Washington's sponsorship. Hajar stressed the significance of Pakistan's regional role, especially after its tripartite agreement with Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
He also noted "Islamabad's readiness to support Lebanon," mentioning its participation in the preparatory conference to support the Lebanese army and security forces in Paris on Thursday and Friday. The conference will feature technical delegations where the Lebanese Army Commander and Director General of Internal Security Forces will express their institutions' needs and challenges.
On Thursday, September 17, a conference to support the Lebanese army and internal security forces will take place, invited by French President Emmanuel Macron, with Lebanese President and Jordanian King Abdullah in attendance.
