Parasitic Disease Strikes South Dakota Family After Eating Bear Meat

A rare parasitic illness has hospitalized six members of an American family after they consumed bear meat kebabs. The family, residing in South Dakota, suffered from severe fever, intense muscle pain, and swelling around the eyes.

Health officials believe the bear carried a parasitic infection typically caused by larvae from a type of roundworm known as Trichinella. Symptoms emerged for the family one week after a 29-year-old male began experiencing muscle pain, fever, and eye swelling. He was hospitalized twice within a few days, with tests later confirming the presence of antibodies for trichinosis.

Five other family members exhibited similar symptoms, including stomach pain and diarrhea. Interestingly, two family members did not show any symptoms at all.
