Saudi Arabia: We Look Forward to Ending Arms Outside the State in Lebanon

In response to the recent violence in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, Saudi Arabia confirmed its support and solidarity with the Lebanese people on Friday, adding that it is closely monitoring the ongoing events. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed in a statement its hope for security and peace to prevail in Lebanon by ending the possession and use of arms outside the framework of the state. It emphasized that strengthening state institutions is in the interest of all Lebanese without exception. Additionally, it affirmed that the Lebanese deserve stability, economic growth for their country, and security that dispels terrorism.

Beirut, particularly the areas of Tayouneh, Chiah, and Ain el-Remmaneh, witnessed unprecedented violence and clashes reminiscent of the years of civil war, with gunfire and shelling. Elements affiliated with Hezbollah and the Amal Movement displayed heavy weapons in the streets, in complete lawlessness, evoking memories of past conflicts for many Lebanese. The clashes resulted in the death of six people and injuries to more than 30, according to the Health Ministry at the time, while President Michel Aoun and the Prime Minister called for de-escalation.

Meanwhile, politicians and members of Hezbollah held responsibility for the rapid security deterioration that occurred, following days of what they described as “incitement” campaigns against the investigating judge in the Beirut port explosion case. It is noted that the clashes were sparked by a protest organized by a group of the party’s supporters and their ally, the Amal Movement (led by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri), in front of the Justice Palace in Beirut, demanding the judge’s resignation. However, the situation quickly deteriorated after a group of protesters entered nearby neighborhoods, leading to gunfire and a rapid decline of the situation on the ground.
