Real Madrid, the leader of the Spanish league, announced on Thursday that four more players have tested positive for the coronavirus, following the announcement of positive tests for Brazilian defender Marcelo and Croatian playmaker Luka Modric for "COVID-19." The club revealed that Welshman Gareth Bale, Marco Asensio, Brazilian Rodrigo, and Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin have joined the list of infected players, while the result for Italian coach Davide Ancelotti, a member of the coaching staff and son of coach Carlo, was also positive.
Real Madrid has taken maximum precautionary and health measures to control the spread of the virus among its ranks, just three days before hosting Cádiz in the 18th round of the competition on Sunday.
The infections were not limited to the football team; Pablo Laso, the basketball team's coach, also tested positive on Monday, alongside French international player Thomas Heurtel, prompting the capital club to pledge to conduct tests for players and managers of other sports departments within the club.
On Wednesday, Real recorded two positive cases: Modric and Marcelo, while the results of the remaining tests were negative. Tests conducted on Thursday morning revealed five positive results (four players and one staff member), bringing the total number of positive cases within the professional football team to seven.
Brazilian Marcelo reassured his supporters by posting a video on social media saying, "Thank you for your messages. I am fine, and my family is too, and I hope to be able to get out of this situation as soon as possible."
