Amazing Benefits of Swimming

A new study describes the benefits of outdoor swimming for people with depression as an alternative to medication. Experts at the University of Portsmouth are working with the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to explore the use of environmental therapy, an intervention through nature, known to improve people's mood. A university spokesperson stated, "The study, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), will provide preliminary support for the use of outdoor swimming as an alternative to antidepressants or talking therapies." Dr. Heather Massey, a co-author from the Department of Sport, Health and Exercise Science at the University of Portsmouth, said, "In this new study, we are looking at outdoor swimming as part of social prescriptions, which aim to support community members." Massey added, "It is a step up in terms of scientific rigor, and volunteers are being sought for the experiment that examines the effects of cold water immersion, which has been proven to reduce levels of stress and depression."
