U.S. President Joe Biden has been given the Korean name Bai Ji Sung during a ceremony marking the end of the Korean War. He is among dozens of high-ranking American officials described as Koreans. The Korea-U.S. Alliance Friendship Association stated, "We are honored to announce and give the Korean name to U.S. President Joseph R. Biden Jr. His name is Bai Ji Sung," noting that "Biden's Korean title comes from Pyeongtaek, a city located about 60 kilometers south of Seoul that hosts the majority of the 28,500 U.S. troops in Korea."
The association explained that "his first name, Ji Sung, means 'region' and 'star,' respectively." They emphasized that the deeper and significant meaning behind naming U.S. President Joseph R. Biden Jr. as "Bai Ji Sung" is to continue fostering peace and maintaining it on the Korean Peninsula while also contributing to global peace.
The presentation of the Korean name to President Biden coincided with allies celebrating the 69th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. Biden is one of many senior U.S. officials the association has referred to as Koreans. Previously, former U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump were known as Oh Han-Ma and Dai-Il, respectively.
