Guterres Congratulates Lebanese on Elections: Form a Unity Government

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, congratulated the Lebanese on their parliamentary elections, noting that he "eagerly awaits the swift formation of a unity government in their country, which is mired in a serious economic crisis and often takes a long time to form a new government."

Guterres said in a statement: "I look forward to the rapid formation of a unity government that can achieve an agreement with the International Monetary Fund and expedite the implementation of the necessary reforms to put Lebanon on the path to economic recovery."

The statement added that "the Secretary-General equally counts on the new parliament to promptly pass all the necessary legislation to achieve economic stability and improve governance." Guterres also appealed to Lebanese political leaders to "work together in the best interest of Lebanon and the Lebanese people."
