Hezbollah Moves Towards Reaching Consensus on Government Formation

Hezbollah is set to resume its efforts in the coming hours to reach a consensus on a government formation.

The Lebanese newspaper "Al-Akhbar" reported that informed sources clarified that Hezbollah's actions constitute "an effort rather than an initiative, which usually includes several items or mediation based on conveying messages from one party to another." The newspaper mentioned that Hezbollah's attempt aims "solely to create trust between President Aoun and Hariri, after this trust collapsed, while the situation is extremely critical due to the economic, financial, and health crises." It added that addressing these crises will be "difficult with a government in place, so how can it be managed when the country lacks an executive authority?"

The sources indicated to the newspaper that Hezbollah intended to begin its efforts before Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros al-Rahi announced his movement to create a settlement, "but Hezbollah preferred to stay aside to allow for al-Rahi's involvement." When all initiatives stalled and yielded no results, Hezbollah decided to resume its efforts, particularly since external pressures can no longer be used as an excuse following Donald Trump's departure from the U.S. presidency, and Hariri is presumed to have become more liberated.

It is noteworthy that the formation of the government in Lebanon has been stalled since the exacerbation of the political crisis following the Beirut port explosion on August 4, which led the current caretaker government, headed by Hassan Diab, to resign.
