Will Aoun Sign a Cabinet That Does Not Satisfy Bassil?

Will Aoun Sign a Cabinet That Does Not Satisfy Bassil?

Amid the ambiguity surrounding the government formation process and the names being discussed behind the scenes, the remarks made by President Najib Mikati from Jordan were noteworthy. During a dialogue meeting organized by the Institute for Policy and Society in the Jordanian capital, Amman, Mikati stated that Lebanon is at a crossroads and it is impossible to continue on the same path. He emphasized that we must start from the Taif Agreement, reinforce it, build upon it, and develop what needs to be developed, stressing the importance of decentralization as a suitable option for the upcoming phase to deal with political and administrative conditions while preserving the unity of the Lebanese state.

Former Deputy Head of the Future Movement and former MP Mustafa Alloush tells "Al Markaziya" that Mikati's position is merely a presentation, and although it may not be timely or suitable, it has not deviated from the Taif agreement. He questioned whether the development of the agreement accepted by the Lebanese as a charter is currently feasible, stating that it certainly is not. Notably, Mikati, who is eager to return to the Grand Serail with the support of France and America, was not obliged to seek proposals, especially from the leader of the Free Patriotic Movement, Gibran Bassil, who binds him with conditions such as the dismissal of the Central Bank governor and obtaining the ministries of foreign affairs, energy, and environment, in addition to first-class appointments, while also hinting at proposing other names for the assignment, such as Nawaf Salam and Amer Al-Basat, who have no capability to form a government.

In response to a question, he stated that President Aoun cannot anger Bassil or contradict him on any issue. Therefore, he ruled out that Aoun would sign any cabinet formation regardless of the name of its president unless it obtains Bassil's approval and satisfaction.
