Arab Countries Face Climate and Food Threats

Environment Minister Nasser Yassin, of the caretaker government, warned of a severe food crisis that Arab countries may face in a few years due to climate change and drought. This warning was made during his participation in the Youth Forum of the East, which started today in Istanbul. Yassin emphasized in his speech that "the world is facing historical realities due to climate change," cautioning of "the possibility of a sharp food crisis in the Arab world in a few years due to drought." He revealed that "67% of land in Arab countries will not be arable in the coming years, which will lead to an unprecedented food crisis." He pointed out that "the environmental crisis will create new challenges such as displacement and migration," insisting that "the reason for this is political leaders' focus on security at the expense of the environment and climate change, as they make decisions that ensure security stability in the short term while forgetting about the long-term impacts of climate change on society."

During the conference, Yassin met with Turkish Youth Minister Muhammed Kasapoğlu, and discussions were held on potential cooperation between the two countries. He also met with Confort Ero, the executive director of the International Crisis Group, who spoke about "the challenges faced by the world in both the west and the east due to wars, conflicts, and the strategic changes occurring globally." Additionally, discussions were held regarding the Lebanese crisis and the efforts being made to resolve political and economic difficulties.
