The authorities in Zimbabwe have reported the deaths of at least 157 children from measles, noting that the number of reported cases since the outbreak of this contagious viral disease began two weeks ago exceeds two thousand. Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa stated at a press conference, "As of August 15, the cumulative toll in the country stands at 2,056 cases and 157 deaths." She added that the government intends to intensify vaccination efforts and will allocate funds from the national disaster fund "to address this emergency." The minister also indicated that the government would seek support from tribal and religious leaders to encourage people to vaccinate their children against this disease. The Health Ministry attributed the current outbreak to religious gatherings. The measles virus primarily attacks children, and among its most severe complications are blindness, diarrhea, and serious respiratory infections. Symptoms of the disease include a red rash that first appears on the face and then spreads to other parts of the body.
