The outbreak of the novel coronavirus in an African country has led to the death of 32 members of parliament. The Vice President of the Parliament in the Democratic Republic of the Congo stated that the deputies died due to complications from COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic. This figure represents approximately five percent of the total number of deputies.
Despite Congo reporting relatively low numbers of COVID-19 cases and fatalities, the disease has swept through the corridors of power, claiming the lives of prominent MPs and significant political figures. Jean-Marc Kabound, the First Deputy of the National Assembly, noted, "According to the latest statement issued by the government, the number of confirmed cases has reached 31,248, with 780 deaths, including 32 members of parliament."
Although wearing masks is mandatory within parliament, some members occasionally disregard this rule when they gather.
