White House: America Discusses with Tunisia the Need to Appoint a Prime Minister

The White House stated in a press release that Jonathan Finer, Deputy National Security Advisor, met with Tunisian President Kais Saied on Friday to discuss Tunisia's urgent need to appoint a Prime Minister tasked with forming a capable government. The statement also mentioned that Finer delivered a message from President Joe Biden to President Saied, "reiterating his personal support and that of his administration for the Tunisian people and urging a swift transition to parliamentary democracy in Tunisia."

Finer arrived in the capital Tunis with Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Joey Hood, according to the statement. It mentioned that Finer "discussed with President Saied the urgent need to appoint a designated Prime Minister to form a capable government that can address the current economic and health crises facing Tunisia."

Additionally, the statement noted that "empowering a new government to stabilize the economy will also create space for an inclusive dialogue on proposed constitutional and electoral reforms." It was mentioned that Finer also met with leaders from civil society and conveyed U.S. support for their active participation in building a democratic future.
