Italian Deputy Foreign Minister Marina Sereni has demanded an "immediate" clarification regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the Jenin camp in the West Bank, according to the Italian news agency Nova.
Sereni stated, "The killing of Shireen Abu Akleh in the Jenin camp in the West Bank is extremely serious; the circumstances must be clarified as soon as possible, and those responsible for her death must be identified and prosecuted."
She added, "In expressing our condolences for the death of the journalist who was killed while performing her duty, we can only reiterate our concern about the risk that even this dramatic incident could contribute to heightened tensions and violence in the Palestinian territories and throughout the Middle East."
She continued, "As we expressed yesterday in Brussels at the meeting of the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee for the Palestinian People, we reaffirm Italy's commitment to supporting the two-state solution, the only solution capable of ensuring peace and security for both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples."
