Three informed sources have revealed to Reuters that Iran is expected to receive its first shipment of up to 400 Chinese-manufactured portable air defense systems within weeks. This move is part of Iran's efforts to bolster its defenses amid ongoing tensions with the United States.
According to Reuters, the deal, valued between $60 and $70 million, represents one of Tehran's most significant initiatives to enhance its short-range air defenses since its conflict with the U.S. and Israel exposed gaps in Iran's capability to protect military sites and strategic infrastructure.
Sources have indicated that the contract involves acquiring between 300 and 400 portable air defense systems, including the Chinese-made QW-12 and FN-16 missiles.
The agreement was signed with Chongqing Baoshang International Investment, a Hong Kong-based company that sources describe as a mediator between Iran and the Chinese supplier.
Because of the sensitivity surrounding the matter, the sources requested anonymity.
The Iranian foreign ministry has not yet responded to requests for comment.
In contrast, the Chinese foreign ministry dismissed the reports as groundless, stating that China has consistently played a role in promoting peace and ending conflicts.
The Chongqing Baoshang Group, headquartered in Beijing and the parent company of Chongqing Baoshang International Investment, also did not respond to an email request for comment on Tuesday.
Despite the agreement's signing, sources warned that delivery schedules, quantities, and other implementation details may change.
According to the plan agreed upon by both parties, deliveries are initially expected to be executed by air from Urumqi in western China, passing through Pakistan into Iran. However, sources did not clarify whether transfers would be conducted by air or overland.
This acquisition underscores Iran's continued reliance on a mix of domestic weapon production and foreign suppliers, despite years of sanctions and import restrictions related to defense.
Previously, Reuters reported that Iran was on the verge of finalizing a separate agreement with China to procure anti-ship cruise missiles, according to individuals familiar with those negotiations. It remains unclear whether this deal has been concluded.
