Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Rajhi, CEO of King Khalid Eye Specialist Hospital, discussed the causes of night blindness. In statements to Al-Ikhbariya channel, Al-Rajhi mentioned that procedures had been performed on two patients suffering from night blindness, which is a hereditary condition that often leads to complete vision loss in most cases.
He explained that initially, there is severe vision impairment, which later progresses to total vision loss. He noted that there are many causes and multiple types of the condition, with one specific type being due to a congenital defect that has a genetic treatment to correct the gene alteration.
Al-Rajhi added that the genetic defect among night blindness patients in the Kingdom is prevalent at a rate of 4%, largely due to consanguineous marriages, as the condition spreads among certain families. He indicated that 28 to 30 individuals with this genetic defect have been documented.
