Lusail Super Cup between the Champions of the Egyptian and Saudi Leagues

The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy announced on Monday that Lusail Stadium, the largest of the eight stadiums hosting the Qatar 2022 World Cup, will host the Lusail Super Cup match between the champions of the Saudi and Egyptian leagues. The football match is scheduled to take place on September 9.

The Secretary-General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, Hassan Al-Thawadi, stated: "This occasion represents the final station on our journey towards the kickoff of the tournament on November 21. This magnificent sports edifice is the jewel of the World Cup stadiums, as it will be the focus of the world's attention when hosting the final match on December 18, coinciding with our celebration of the national day of the state."

He added: "We take pride in this distinctive sports landmark that will play an important role during the tournament and will leave a lasting legacy for the residents of Lusail and the State of Qatar in general."

For his part, the CEO of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, Nasser Al-Khater, remarked: "Hosting this match at Lusail Stadium is an ideal opportunity to test its readiness and enhance the operational plans we have prepared for the anticipated event."

The Qatar Stars League had previously released the schedule for the new season, which included a match between Al-Arabi and Al-Rayyan, both of which have a large fan base, at Lusail Stadium as part of the second phase. Among the eight stadiums designated for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, Lusail is the only one that has not hosted any matches yet.

The gas-rich emirate is hosting the unique winter edition of the World Cup for the first time in the Middle East, from November 21 to December 18, 2022. The 64 matches of the Qatar 2022 World Cup in football, which will kick off in less than four months, will take place in eight stadiums, seven of which are newly built, along with the development of Khalifa International Stadium, with Lusail being the largest, accommodating eighty thousand spectators and hosting the final match.

Lusail Stadium, located 16 kilometers from the center of Doha, will host 10 matches up to and including the anticipated semi-finals and final. The design of Lusail Stadium is inspired by the interplay of light and shadow characteristic of traditional Arab lanterns. Its structure and façade reflect the intricate patterns found on food vessels and other artworks from across the Arab and Islamic world during the rise of civilization in the region.
