The announcement by the leader of the Progressive Socialist Party, Walid Jumblatt, about his upcoming meeting with "Hezbollah" has dominated the political scene, particularly regarding its potential implications for the presidential file. Sources indicate that Jumblatt will meet with Hezbollah's liaison and coordination unit head, Wafiq Safa, and the political advisor to the Hezbollah Secretary-General, Hussein Khalil, within the next 48 hours in Clemency.
While some view this meeting as Jumblatt’s pivot towards "Hezbollah," which could alter the political landscape in line with regional developments and the winds of the Vienna international negotiations, informed sources tell "Al-Markazia" that dialogue is an approach Jumblatt and the Progressive Socialist Party have adhered to for many years. Jumblatt had called for dialogue even during the toughest phases, including the recent elections, amidst attempts to marginalize and eliminate the Progressive Socialist Party and Jumblatt himself, promoting a message of democratic resistance and rational discourse.
The sources highlight that today, after the elections reaffirmed Jumblatt's position and popularity, Hezbollah is recognizing the failure of the attempts to marginalize him. Additionally, Jumblatt maintains his principles of dialogue with everyone. Considering the current economic, social, and political challenges in Lebanon, as well as the international context, dialogue remains the least costly path for the Lebanese.
As for the agenda of the meeting with Hezbollah, according to the sources, the primary focus will be on returning to the agreed-upon framework for organizing disagreements from a prior phase. Following that, they will discuss all topics of mutual concern, especially regarding living and daily challenges, and explore possible reforms that could help curb the collapse. They might agree on some political issues or not, which is why the relationship is termed as organizing disagreements. The topic of the presidency has not been previously discussed, and the meeting will be open-ended to determine areas of convergence and divergence.
