Independent and "change" MPs are trying to organize themselves ahead of upcoming elections, particularly the presidential election. In this context, they held an extensive retreat yesterday at the headquarters of the "National Alliance" party in Ashrafieh, during which they discussed the challenges of the upcoming phase on both political and economic levels.
MP Wadhah Sadiq revealed that "the atmosphere of the meeting was more than excellent, and discussions centered on the nature of the upcoming phase, not just on the form of the presidency." He noted that an initiative will be launched based on the specifications for the president they desire, emphasizing that they do not want a confrontational president who would lead the country into a period of paralysis, as was witnessed during Michel Aoun's term. Instead, they seek a figure who is acceptable to all, meeting the criteria they set, which include being independent and having an economic and political program.
In an interview with the "Anbaa" electronic newspaper, Sadiq mentioned that "discussions will continue next week, and several names will be proposed. We will reach out to everyone, and we are open to any parties interested in coordinating with us on this issue, even those in power."
On the economic front, Sadiq stated that "the authority has drained the reform laws of their substance, such as the capital control and banking secrecy laws, and has not approved the 2022 budget, which contains fictitious numbers, considering it was prepared a long time ago. The 2023 budget should be presented within a month as per constitutional deadlines, and no recovery plan has been set yet. We will be present on this front to restore normalcy."
