Dutch police reported that they found a live person who had secretly hidden behind the wheels of a cargo plane that landed at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam from South Africa, according to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
The flight from Johannesburg to Amsterdam takes approximately 11 hours, and it is believed that the cargo plane made a stop in Nairobi, Kenya, before continuing to Amsterdam. It is not common for individuals who hide behind the wheels of planes to survive long flights due to the cold and low oxygen levels at high altitudes.
Dutch Royal Military Police spokesperson, Joanna Helmondz, told Agence France-Presse: "The man was found alive behind the front wheels of the plane and was taken to the hospital in stable condition." She added, "It is very remarkable that the man is alive."
A spokesperson for the cargo company "Cargolux" confirmed in an email to Reuters that the person hiding was aboard a plane operated by "Cargolux Italia." According to flight data, the only cargo flight from "Cargolux" that departed from Johannesburg to Schiphol on Sunday made a stop in Nairobi as well, and it is not known if the man boarded the plane in South Africa or Kenya. The police have not disclosed the man's age or nationality.
