Telecommunications Minister Johnny Qaram said, "I am proud to have created a collaborative atmosphere with all sector officials. We installed solar energy and tried to curb waste, and we negotiated with suppliers to stagger payments over several years. The decision to stop the 2G service will save us $42 million in the upcoming years."
Qaram added in a press conference, "If the decree to raise telecommunications fees is not approved, do not hold me responsible. The elections are over, and the issue can no longer be politicized. Not approving the fee increase will have a more negative impact on citizens. We raise our voice on behalf of the Lebanese economy; tomorrow is the last chance for the Cabinet to stop the sector's collapse and raise cellular sector fees. Without internet, there are no schools, no hospitals, and no economy; and without an economy, there is no Lebanon."
He continued, "If my proposal is not acted upon, my resignation is on the table because telecommunications has no alternative, and it is my duty to implement the laws. It is urgent that this sector regains its stability."
