Iranian Foreign Minister on New US Administration: Two Options

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif stated that the new US administration has two options.

In a tweet posted today, Zarif mentioned, "The new US administration has a fundamental choice to make." He elaborated that the new administration could either adopt the failed policies of its predecessor and continue to disregard international cooperation and law, or it could reject the failed assumptions and pursue peace and courtesy. Zarif emphasized that if Biden chooses to abandon Trump's failed policies and return to the nuclear agreement, Iran will revert to fulfilling its obligations.

Previously, Zarif also told the Iranian newspaper that the only option available to the newly elected American President Joe Biden in this regard is to adhere to UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which calls for lifting sanctions against Iran in exchange for Tehran's return to full compliance with the nuclear agreement. Zarif stated, "If Mr. Biden wishes to fulfill his country's commitments under the UN Security Council resolution, we can also immediately return to our full obligations under the nuclear agreement... The United States is in no position to set conditions."

Zarif refuted claims that it is impossible to lift the sanctions imposed by Trump, indicating that Biden could revoke them with just three presidential orders. It is worth noting that former US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear agreement with Iran and reimposed the harshest sanctions on the Iranian regime. Trump justified the withdrawal from the agreement by stating that it had failed to stop Tehran's destabilizing activities and its efforts to obtain a nuclear weapon while deterring it from pursuing its ballistic missile program.

Trump said in a White House address at the time, "I announce that America will withdraw from the agreement with Iran, and in a few moments I will sign a memorandum to begin sanctions on the Iranian regime," adding that "our sanctions may also include other countries complicit with Iran." Trump believed that allowing this agreement to continue would soon result in a nuclear weapon in the Middle East, mentioning discussions with allies for a sustainable and comprehensive solution.

The discussion about the nuclear agreement with Iran resurfaces following the inauguration of the new US President Joe Biden, who confirmed during his election campaign that if he won, he would return to the nuclear agreement with Iran under new conditions.
