Australia Issues Temporary Approval for Continued Qantas and Emirates Alliance

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission announced today, Thursday, that it has issued a temporary approval for the ongoing alliance for passenger and cargo transport between Australian airline Qantas and Emirates, and it is evaluating the companies' request for a final approval.

Commissioner Anna Brakey stated, "The commission may review the temporary approval at any time, and the granting of temporary approval should not be seen as an indication that final approval will be issued or not."

Under the current approval, Qantas and Emirates coordinate operations between their networks to cover travel routes between Australia, the UK, Europe, New Zealand, Asia, and North Africa.

The current approval, which lasts five years, is set to expire at the end of March. The commission noted in a statement that the two companies are seeking to extend it for another five years.
