The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced today, Tuesday, that the confirmed number of civilian deaths in the Russian attack on Ukraine is nearing 8,500, noting concerns about several thousand unverified deaths. In a statement, it stated, "We have recorded 8,490 deaths and 14,244 injuries from the start of the attack on February 24, 2022, to April 9, 2023." The office pointed out that "the Commission believes that the actual figures are much higher due to delays in receiving information from some locations experiencing intense fighting, and many reports still need verification."
