"World Sparrow Day" is dedicated to raising awareness about this bird species in urban environments and the threats they face, celebrated on March 20. This celebration is an international initiative launched by the Nature Forever Society in India and several local and international organizations worldwide.
The founder of the Nature Forever Society, "Mohammad Dilawar," is an Indian environmental activist who began his work by helping sparrows in the Nashik area. He was recognized as one of Time magazine's "Heroes of the Environment" in 2008 for his efforts.
The aim of the celebration is to provide a platform for people to work on conserving sparrows and other similar birds and to connect and exchange related ideas that will lead to improved science and better outcomes.
The sparrow is also known as the house sparrow, typically grayish-black in color, and is widely spread across the world. This British-origin bird is very loved for its innocence and delicacy.
Due to its small size and frail body, this bird falls prey to many predators such as cats, dogs, snakes, and foxes, which has led to a decline in sparrow populations. They have decreased rapidly over the past 25 years, with statistics showing that London lost half of its sparrow population between 1994 and 2000.
