France accused Iran on Tuesday of violating an international treaty that governs consular relations between countries, stating that Tehran has publicly shown that it arbitrarily detains foreign nationals. Iran released one of these individuals, the Iranian-French academic Fariba Adelkhah.
In response, Nasser Kanani, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, informed reporters on Monday that the French government is interfering in Iran's affairs and adopting destructive positions regarding events in the Islamic Republic. He stated, "It is clear that these stances and actions taken by France will not help in negotiations regarding prisoners."
French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Anne-Claire Legendre found Kanani's statements highly concerning, highlighting the arbitrary nature of the detention of French citizens. She added, "This is an acknowledgment from Iranian authorities of the violation of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, which forms the basis of diplomatic relations between countries," calling for the immediate release of French citizens.
