Cardiologist Dr. Aidar Sharafiev warned about the possibility of a heart attack that could have serious consequences due to severe stress. In a conversation with the newspaper "Izvestia," the specialist addressed internet questions about whether the heart cannot withstand sorrow. He stated, "This is a fact. Following a strong shock or severe stress, 'Broken Heart Syndrome' or Takotsubo cardiomyopathy can arise. In this condition, the upper part of the heart expands, leading to the formation of an area that does not contract or function. This alters the heart's usual shape, causing it to expand at the top and contract at the base, resembling a bottle neck."
He added, "The symptoms that appear in this case are similar to those of a heart attack, with the person experiencing similar pain." The specialist mentioned that the causes of "Broken Heart Syndrome" are still unknown. However, there are two main theories about it. The first theory suggests that a significant stress response causes a noticeable spasm in the heart's arteries. The second theory posits that it results from disruptions in the heart's microvascular functions.
He stated, "Broken Heart Syndrome can lead to death. However, in many cases, the heart returns to its normal state. By the way, Broken Heart Syndrome occurs more frequently in winter than at any other time."
