Turkish Cypriots accused the United Nations on Tuesday of being biased against them in a dispute over a road paving project that led to the most serious incidents of tension in the ethnically divided island in years last week. The United Nations Security Council condemned these incidents, the most severe in years, in a statement issued on Monday. Turkish Cypriots and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that the actions of the peacekeeping forces are unacceptable and that the road project is necessary. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Foreign Ministry stated, "The recent incident once again revealed the biased position of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus."
