Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Europe on Thursday to enhance the supply of modern weapons and expedite their delivery, as well as to impose stricter sanctions on Russia.
In a lengthy, intense video address to EU leaders, Zelensky stated that it is up to the 27-member bloc to take action to contain Russia, more than a year after its invasion of Ukraine. He addressed EU leaders who had discussions with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, saying, "If Europe waits, time may allow evil to regroup and prepare for years of war. You can prevent this."
He pointed out that the European Union has been delaying decisions on providing long-range weapons and modern fighter jets and moving forward with discussions about granting Ukraine EU membership.
He continued, "We cannot keep delaying the transfer of weapons to our soldiers... We need modern planes... Is there really any logical reason for the delay regarding modern aircraft?" Zelensky also complained that the EU does not seem to be rushing to impose more sanctions on Russia.
