Medvedev Reaches Wimbledon Quarterfinals for the First Time

Russian Daniil Medvedev, ranked third, reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for the first time today, Monday, after his fourth-round opponent Jiri Lehecka withdrew following losses in the first two sets, 6-4 and 6-2. Lehecka, 21 years old, who played a five-set match for four hours against Tommy Paul in the previous round, requested medical time after the first set due to an issue with his right foot. The Czech player, who committed 33 unforced errors during the match, struggled in the second set. Medvedev, 27, said in a court interview: "I feel sorry for Jiri after his injury in the fourth round of Wimbledon, but he has many other major tournaments ahead to achieve his dreams." Wimbledon has been the least successful major tournament for Medvedev, who previously won the US Open in 2021. He did not compete at Wimbledon last year due to the ban on Russian players following Moscow's attack on Ukraine, which Russia describes as a "special military operation."
