International Criminal Court Investigates Crimes in Darfur

The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, revealed in a report that the court is "receiving reports of violations in Sudan that warn of a repetition of history, when the Security Council had to refer Sudan to the International Criminal Court." The report states that "the ICC Prosecutor is carefully monitoring reports regarding (crimes) of extrajudicial killings, burning of homes and markets, and acts of looting in Geneina, West Darfur, as well as the killing and displacement of civilians in North Darfur and other areas across Darfur." He added that "the court is also looking into allegations of sexual crimes and gender-based crimes, including mass rape and reported violence against children and crimes affecting them." He noted that "while the International Criminal Court currently cannot operate in Sudan due to the security situation, it intends to do so as soon as possible. According to the Security Council resolution of 2005, its jurisdiction is limited to the Darfur region."
