The French national team overcame their Austrian counterparts with a score of two goals to nil on Thursday, in the fifth round of the first level of the European Nations League group stage. The goals for the "Les Bleus" were scored by star Kylian Mbappé and veteran striker Olivier Giroud in the 56th and 65th minutes, respectively.
According to the statistics network "Opta," Giroud, with his goal against Austria, became the oldest player to score for the French national team in history, at the age of 35 years and 357 days. It added that Giroud surpassed the previous record held by Roger Marche, who scored for France against Spain in December 1959 at the age of 35 years and 287 days.
Giroud's goal was his 49th international goal, leaving him only two goals away from equaling Thierry Henry's record as the all-time top scorer for the French national team, with 51 goals.
France climbed to third place in Group A of the European Nations League after raising its points tally to 5, leaving Austria in the last fourth place with 4 points. Croatia leads the group with 10 points, followed by Denmark in second place with 9 points.
