Pope Francis called on both parties in the conflict in Sudan to lay down their arms today, expressing his sorrow over the ongoing violence in the country for more than a month.
Speaking to the audience in St. Peter's Square, the Pope said, "Encouraging the partial agreements reached so far, I renew my heartfelt appeal to lay down arms," urging the international community to spare no effort until a language of dialogue prevails and the suffering of the people is alleviated.
He added, "Please, let us not get used to conflicts and violence, let us not get used to war. We must continue to support the people of Ukraine, torn apart by war."
The confrontations between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have led to the deterioration of the system and security. The two sides reached an agreement late Saturday night for a seven-day ceasefire, which is set to take effect tomorrow evening.
